Originally conceived by the US Military for operations in the field, today’s GPS systems are used by consumers and businesses alike. The GPS network consists of 24 satellites that orbit the earth twice a day, each on their own set path. The signals from these satellites are then transferred back to a GPS receiving unit on the ground, and the information gathered from them is used to determine where the GPS user is.

As long as the GPS user is in receiving range of at least three satellites, their location can be accurately calculated depending on a simple equation:

• The time it takes a signal to reach the ground receiver from the time it was originally sent determines how far away the satellite receiver is.
• Combine this with how far each in-range satellite is from the others and this enables the software to triangulate your exact location. The more satellites talking to each other, the more accurate the mapping of the user’s location.
